scotland’s cindytalk attempt difficult pathways. arcane footsteps that lead to both the ring of brodgar and the exploration of long evacuated space stations. abstracted electronics that feel at once alien and yet strangely familiar. dangerous yet never malevolent - a rich sonic poetry of decay. into the 21st century and cindytalk are many things all at the same time, shapeshifters supreme. in tandem with this is the abstract electronic compositions, beautifully worked, on a series of editions mego album releases from 2009 until 2019. formed in edinburgh in 1982, from the ashes of local punk group the freeze, cindytalk almost immediately relocated to london, instantly broadening it’s horizons. whilst cinder has been cindytalk’s sole constant member since the beginning, a series of band albums from camouflage heart (1984) to wappinschaw (1995) saw the group develop an often uncompromisingly dark, intense and poetic body of work, with cinder’s vocals complemented by music which moved between industrial, post-punk, ambient and fully improvised, while directly connecting across disciplines to performance, film and other media. dais records (usa) are currently reissuing those albums in 2022-25. cinder, has steered this unique collective through a multitude of changes and collaborations over the years ( this mortal coil, somatic responses, becoming /// animal & in the mouth of the wolf with berlins' ancient methods ) seeing festival bookings all across the world… tectonics festival glasgow, summer happenings at the broad museum los angeles, unsound krakow, meltdown london as well as standalone shows in tokyo, osaka, shanghai, napoli, cork, prague & berlin to name but a few. uk based label false walls issued cindytalks' subterminal in 2022, whilst los angeles' line - sound art editions - issued when the moon is a thread in 2023.

this particular line-up of cindytalk features cinder alongside becoming /// animal partner & ZU stalwart massimo farjon pupillo and thighpaulsandra, intrinsic collaborator with coil and many many others.

ESPLENDOR GEOMÉTRICO (ESP)

Born in 1980 as a trio, and currently a duo formed by Arturo Lanz (founding member) and Saverio Evangelista (member since 1991), Esplendor Geométrico is an influential and international cult band and also a rare case in the Spanish music scene, as they have developed their own independent path aside from tags, fashion or trends, in spite of being often classified as industrial music. Their career during this four decades hasn’t had interruptions. They haven’t stopped composing, releasing albums or playing live (with more intensity since the nineties), and they have continued for the simple pleasure of making music.

E.G. soon achieved a personal and distinct style that can be appreciated from their 80´s albums , when they used analog synthesizers and primitive electronic percussion, to the present time with new digital tools. Despite the great changes in the electronic sound with the evolution of technology, they are easily recognizable. Their influence has marked many later artists, usually classified in the so-called industrial music or rhythm&noise, as well as artists from current techno and certain types of experimental noise music.

INNER VISION LAB (PL)

Active since March 2005, Inner Vision Laboratory (I.V.Lab) is a musical project behind which is the music artist Karol Skrzypiec (born 1985, a graduate of music schools of the first and second degree, piano specialisation). Stylistically, I.V.Lab's output can be classified mainly as dark industrial ambient, however in his works, one can also find elements of ethnic music, classical music, as well as inspirations taken from many other fields of sound art. The very first recordings resulted in the Set Of Several Illustrations album, released via the Far From Showbiz netlabel, while the project's subsequent albums were put out by labels such as Rage In Eden, Zoharum, No Angels Productions, and Beast Of Prey. On releases that followed, the project evolved from simple experiments towards broadly defined illustrative and conceptual music. Inner Vision Laboratory's pieces are created using synthesizer sounds, piano, field recordings, and samples.

JOB KARMA (PL)

Job Karma treats industrial as a starting point for artistic freedom, exploration and unlimited experiments. As a codeword which involves industrial noise, elaborate, multilayer ambient as well as dance beat. The principle behind the music of Job Karma was always: no limits. A distinctive, immediately recognizable aspect of Job Karma's music is the sound created from age-old low and high frequency generators and oscillators, sine waves. Unique sounds of devices, which were not originally designed to be musical instruments, links with modulated by timbres of old analog synthesizers. The pieces are constructed on loops, timbre spots, blends and sequences. The integral element of Job Karma's tracks are samples discovered in the archives and those recorded by the sound artists themselves, on different continents. Mostly in North Africa and Asia Minor. In trance forms, rituals of vision and sound, Job Karma's music work joins urban primitivism and reflects cyivilisation overload. The project debuted in 1997 as a duo formed by Maciej Frett and Aurelisz Pisarzewski, with permanent collaboration of a visual artist Arkadiusz Baginski, enriching their concerts with video projections of his auteur films. Musical activity comes along with popularisation activity. The members of Job Karma are also the curators of the festival we are attending now

SPIRITUAL FRONT play Armageddon Gigolo (IT)

Spiritual Front is a neofolk band from Rome, Italy. Its members describe their music as "nihilist suicide pop", although elements of neoclassical and rock music are prevelant, along with a recurring experimental feel. The band began in 1999 as a project fronted by Simone Salvatori (a.k.a. "Hellvis"), a guitarist and singer from Italy, and has since worked extensively with other projects in the same genre of neofolk, along with releasing their own music to the public. Spiritual Front's so-called "Mafia-Folk" has been in release since 1999, in which time Simone Salvatori, the lyricist and conceptualist behind SF, has been known to create a unique feel within their traditionally folk style.
Their most noticeable recurring output is Simone's charismatic playing of the acoustic guitar, along with martial drum beats characteristic of the neofolk genre. Slow and often melancholic vocals (leaning towards dark folk) are often contrasted with cabaret-like, somewhat comedic "swing-singing" and are reminicent of swing revival sound (particularly noticeable in their album Nihilist Cocktails For Calypso Inferno), showing the absolute dichotomy of Salvatori's compositions. Emotional piano chords are also frequently featured, with occasional violin playing and solos. The use of field recording is also apparent in many of Spiritual Front's albums, often attributing an ambient feel to their work.
